SATONAKA Machiko

Manga artist, born 24 January 1948, who began her professional career at the age of 16 when she won the 1st Kodansha Newcomer Manga Award for ‘Pia's Portrait’.

Major works include ‘Bright Tomorrow’, ‘Maidens of Aries’, ‘The Aurora at Sea’, ‘Asunaro Zaka’, ‘The Story of Empress Jito’ and many others.

She received the 2006 Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award, the 2010 Commissioner for Cultural Affairs Award, the 2014 Minister for Foreign Affairs Award, the 2023 Cultural Merit Award, among others. (President of the Japan Cartoonists Association, representative of Manga Japan, head of the Character Creation Department at Osaka University of Arts, and other posts.

AKIMOTO Osamu

Born 11 December 1952 in Kameari, Katsushika-ku, Tokyo

Debuted with ‘KochiKame: Tokyo Beat Cops’.

Kochikame’ was serialised for 40 years.

Subsequent works include ‘BLACK TIGER’.

Currently serialises ‘Mr. Clice’.

IWAMI Seiji

Born 2 April 1960 in Wakayama Prefecture.

He debuted in 1980 when his work was selected for publication in Manga Time magazine and has been active in a wide variety of media, mainly four-frame manga, including magazines and sports newspapers. He is active in international cultural exchange activities through manga, and has a wide range of activities, including being dispatched to Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and the UK as a 2010 Cultural Exchange Envoy by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and also he teaches at the Character Design Department of Osaka University of Arts. Apart from manga, he also enjoys performing arts and is active in portrait comic storytelling at Yose entertainment venues in the Kansai region, showing his versatile talent.

KIMURA Naomi

Born 17 September 1962 in Chiba.

In 1978, his work was selected for the Manga Shonen Newcomer Award with honorable mention. His award-winning work ‘The Last Fairy’ was published in the same magazine, and he made his debut as a manga artist at the age of 15. He devoted himself to manga activities as soon as he graduated from high school and continued to be active with his outstanding drawing skills and screen composition. His representative works include ‘Dark Cat’, ‘Asagao: Forensic Doctor’ (original story by Masahito Kagawa) and ‘The Samurai to be Followed Alone: Oguri Kozukenosuke’. 2003: ‘Dr.Tenjin’ won the Excellence Award in the Manga Division of the 7th Japan Media Arts Festival.

KURATA Yoshimi

Born 13 May 1954in Akita Prefecture.

In 1978, ‘Moeizuru...’ was selected for the 4th Shogakukan New Comic Award. The same year it was published in Weekly Shōnen Sunday and made its debut. Since then, he has continued to develop his career as a manga artist, with ‘Aji Ichimonme’ (drawing) being among his best-known works. He has participated in many international cultural exchange activities and boasts a varied career that includes giving lectures and workshops in other countries.

SHIGA Kimie

Born 4 March 1948 in Kanagawa Prefecture.

Debuted in 1967 with ‘Where Junko was born’ in Shukan Margaret, extra issue. Her serialization in Shukan Margaret from 1969, ‘Smash!’ was made into a TV drama titled ‘Youth for the court’ and broadcast by Fuji Television. She is also active in the field of women's comics and has published a number of works, including ‘Nijiko Lullaby’, one of her best-known titles.

SHOJI Yoko

1968 Debut in ‘The Sea and Pretty Rukokku’ (Shoujo Friend extra edition) In 1977, ‘Dear Student!’ won the Kodansha Manga Award. The story was later continued in sequels from 2004 to 2023 as a story about the characters after they became adults. Other notable works include ‘Gotokuji Familky’ and ‘Saint Adams’.

SUGAYA Mitsuru

Born 20 September 1950 in Shizuoka Prefecture.

After graduating from high school, worked as a manga artist's assistant and then in an editorial production company before joining Ishinomori Productions in 1971, where he made his debut as a manga artist with ‘Kamen Rider’ (original story by Shotaro Ishinomori, serialized in Kodansha's TV Magazine). Since then, he has worked on the comicisation of numerous TV productions. After becoming independent, he serialized ‘The Game-center Arashi’ in 1978 in Korokoro Comic, which became his best-known work.

MIURA Mitsuru

Born 1954 in Yokohama, Japan. 1972 Debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump.

After working as an assistant to Tezuka Osamu, began serialization in Shonen Magazine and other publications.

His best-known work, ‘The ♡ PUMPKIN WINE’, was made into a TV animation in 1982.

This work won the 7th Kodansha Manga Award in the Juvenile Division.

Other works include ‘Maria; The Convenience Store Girl ’ (made into a TV drama in 2001), ‘Coconut Avenue’, ‘Lensman’ and many others.

Retired as a manga artist (published activities) in 2017. Currently he creates picture books, illustrations, etc.
